La pera: a tropical rainforest refuge
This tour is perfect for travelers, naturalists or photographers with little time who want to reconnect with nature, without the need for long trips. Just minutes from the city, we will discover hidden gems: live tropical jungles, vibrant bodies of water and monumental canyons. Every day we will immerse ourselves in a different experience that reveals the surprising biodiversity of the heart of Chiapas.
In the morning we will leave for Lagoon Belgium, an educational park and conservation center located just 25 minutes from Tuxtla. This site is home to fragments of rainforest, bodies of water and habitats perfect for observing fauna and flora.
During the walk, we’ll focus on charismatic species such as the gartered trogon (Trogon caligatus), the collared trogon (Trogon collaris), and a variety of tree frogs, including the famous red-eyed tree frog (Agalychnis callidryas) and the black-eyed frog (Craugastor spp.).
Among ceibas, vines and bromeliads, we will also find colorful insects, reptiles and wild orchids.
After half a day of activities, we return to Tuxtla Gutiérrez for dinner and rest.
We leave very early for La Pera, a jewel of conservation located in the municipality of Berriozábal, just 40 minutes from Tuxtla. This conservation area protects fragments of tropical sub-deciduous forest, rich in endemic species and ecological importance.
We will explore trails that cross ravines and seasonal streams—habitat for monkeys, emerald toucanets, chestnut-mandibled toucans, collared aracaris, trogons, woodpeckers, and hummingbirds.
Camera traps in the area have recorded species such as the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), agoutis, coatis, and a surprising diversity of reptiles and butterflies.
During the afternoon, we will make a second walk focused on photography of macrofauna and tropical plants.
Return to Tuxtla in the afternoon-night for dinner and share stories of the day.
We close the tour with an unforgettable experience: a boat ride through the Sump Canyon, one of the most impressive geological formations in Mexico.
During the tour of the Grijalva river, we will be attentive to observe river crocodiles, spider monkeys, herons, cormorants, peregrine hawks and until osprey eagles.
The high walls of the canyon, which reach more than 1000 meters high, offer us spectacular scenarios for landscape and wildlife photography.
After the tour, we will visit a viewpoint to get a panoramic view of the canyon and the lower basin.
Return to Tuxtla to finish the tour.
