A 14-day expedition crossing Guatemala and Chiapas, from the highland volcanoes to the Pacific mangroves, the foggy forests and the most exuberant jungles of the Mexican southeast.
This trip connects you with the most representative ecosystems of Mesoamerica and with the cultures that have learned to live in harmony with them. Active volcanoes, lakes of volcanic origin, high-altitude coffee plantations, impenetrable jungles and a neotropical fauna that includes quetzals, jaguars, spider monkeys and tapirs await you.
Guatemala City
Reception at the airport and transfer to the hotel. At night, a welcome talk where you will meet the guides team, the spirit of the Mesoamerican Path and an introduction to the biological and cultural megadiversity of the region.
Lake Atitlan
We will sail through the lake surrounded by volcanoes. We will visit San Juan La Laguna to learn about projects of agroecological coffee and traditional textile art.
Between volcanoes and Mayan peoples
Morning tour of ecological trails in the Atitlán Nature Reserve. In the afternoon, transfer to San Marcos, en route to the Tacaná volcano.
Tacana volcano
We begin the approach to the binational colossus. We arrive at a rural community ‘Canton Chiquihuites’ close to 2,500 meters where we will rest before the great ascent.
Ascent and descent
Ascent and summit of Tacaná. Spectacular panoramas to Guatemala and Mexico. We go down to a community on the Mexican side to rest.
Unión Juárez: fog, coffee and volcanoes
Active rest day: to recover from the ascent and descent we walk through the coffee plantations of altitude, tasting coffee, and visit to natural viewpoints in the “Switzerland Chiapaneca”.
La Encrucijada: Living Coastal Forests
We will explore by boat through the different channels within the immense mangroves. The observation of waterfowl, reptiles and mangroves of more than 20 meters high will be the main activity of the day.
El Triunfo: Coast Trail
The walk begins from the community of 3 de Mayo, ascending through the Coast Trail, one of the most scenic and biodiverse routes towards triumph. We arrived at the base camp in the afternoon.
In search of the quetzal and the horned guan
Day of deep exploration in the forest. Walk with expert guides to find the resplendent quetzal and the horned guan, both sacred birds. Observation of epiphytic flora, monumental trees and traces of mammals.
El Triunfo
Tour to the highest points of the reserve. From the viewpoint Costa, on clear days you can see the Pacific. At the top, the trees are lined with mosses, lichens and wild orchids.
Descent into the tropical forests
Gradual descent along the trails to Prussian farm. Then we move to the region of the Ocote, home of caves, canyons and underground rivers.
La Venta river and Underground Secrets
Walk to the imposing canyon La Venta river. Visit to natural caverns, crystalline rivers and sighting of fauna on its margins.
San Cristobal de las Casas
Tour of this colonial city. Free time to visit museums, markets, galleries and enjoy the local gastronomy. farewell dinner.
Montebello lakes: Liquid border between Mexico and Guatemala
Visit to the most photogenic lakes of Chiapas. Possibility of rafting and hiking along trails that border lakes with waters of different shades.
