This journey has been designed for birdwatchers and naturalists seeking a broad, diverse, and in-depth route through southern and east-central Mexico. Over 17 days, we will travel from the Pacific coast of Oaxaca to the Gulf of Mexico, exploring Huatulco, Pluma Hidalgo, San José del Pacífico, Oaxaca City, the Central Valleys, the Sierra Juárez, Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve, the Sierra Mixteca-Mazateca, the Perote Valley, Cofre de Perote, Xalapa, and the Veracruz coast.
The expedition connects an extraordinary range of ecosystems: tropical dry forest, coastal habitats, open ocean, shade-grown coffee plantations, cloud forest, pine-oak forest, xerophytic scrubland, columnar cactus forests, semi-arid canyons, wetlands, lagoons, high-elevation volcanic landscapes, and the Gulf Coast.
This route is designed for travelers who want more than a bird list. It is a complete experience of nature, culture, gastronomy, archaeology, coffee, mezcal, community conservation, and some of Mexico’s most remarkable landscapes.

– Search for Military Macaw at Cañón del Sabino / Alas Verdes, a successful community conservation model.
– Visit to the Tehuacán Viejo Archaeological Zone and transition into Veracruz.
– Exploration of Amatlán de los Reyes and tropical lagoons near Córdoba.
– Birding in the Perote Valley and visit to Cantona, combining highland dry-country birds and archaeology.

Arrival at Bahías de Huatulco International Airport and transfer to the hotel. Relaxed start to recover after the international journey.
Birding at Ecoturística Las Ninfas, searching for tropical dry forest species, cuckoos, hummingbirds, trogons, owls, and Pacific lowland birds. Afternoon at leisure or optional visit to Huatulco.
Pelagic birding trip from Huatulco in search of Pacific seabirds. Afternoon transfer to Pluma Hidalgo.
Birding in the coffee plantations and forests of Pluma Hidalgo. Afternoon transfer to San José del Pacífico, with birding stops along the route.
Birding in San José del Pacífico, surrounded by mountain forest and mist. Afternoon transfer to Oaxaca City, with a visit to a mezcal palenque in the Central Valleys.
Visit to the Yagul Archaeological Site and birding in the Central Valleys. Traditional lunch in Tlacolula de Matamoros and afternoon birding at Teotitlán del Valle / La Presita.
Full-day birding in the Sierra Juárez, covering La Cumbre and the Benito Juárez–Teotitlán route, with searches for endemic and mountain species.
Free morning in Oaxaca City to rest, explore markets, museums, historic streets, or cultural sites. This is a strategic recovery day before continuing into more remote regions.
Transfer to Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve. Exploration of Santiago Quiotepec, interpretive trails, and semi-arid landscapes with columnar cacti. Afternoon search for Military Macaw at Cañón del Sabino / Alas Verdes.
Birding around Cuicatlán and visit to the Tehuacán Viejo Archaeological Zone. Later transfer to Córdoba, Veracruz.
Exploration of Amatlán de los Reyes, searching for Sumichrast’s Wren and other species of karstic tropical forest. Afternoon visit to Lagunas El Porvenir for waterbirds, wetland species, and tropical birds.
Birding in the Zongolica region. Afternoon transfer to the Perote Valley / Tepeyahualco area.
Birding in the Perote Valley, with species associated with high-elevation dry habitats. Afternoon visit to the Cantona Archaeological Zone.
Exploration of Cofre de Perote and the forests of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, searching for Bearded Wood-Partridge, Strickland’s Woodpecker, Transvolcanic Jay, and other highland species. Transfer to Xalapa.
Birding around Chavarrillo, searching for Mexican Sheartail, Blue-capped Motmot, Black-crested Titmouse, Crimson-collared Grosbeak, and other regional specialties. Birding afternnon at Macuiltépetl Ecological Park.
Transfer toward the Veracruz International Airport area. Final birding session at Arroyo Moreno State Reserve, with opportunities for waterbirds, American Pygmy Kingfisher, and Veracruz Wren. Farewell dinner in the Port of Veracruz.
Transfer to Veracruz International Airport for departure.
Activity Level:
Moderate to demanding. This expedition includes early morning departures, natural trails, boat rides, a pelagic outing, long road transfers, major elevation changes, and several consecutive days of intensive birding. It is recommended for travelers with good general fitness and a serious interest in birdwatching or natural history.
